It has almost become fashionable in concert programs to combine the very old with the very new. Often this appears forced. Not so, however, with the successful blend of eight piano sonatas by the prolific composer Domenico Scarlatti with three of the nine „Wiener Tänze“ penned by the Austrian Thomas Daniel Schlee (*1957), performed by Gerda Struhal at the Wiener Musikverein. Struhal succeeded in leveling the 272-year age difference between the composers by making Scarlatti’s modernity audible. As for the pianistic joy of playing, the composers could almost be brothers!
