{"id":3566,"date":"2019-01-08T10:05:20","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T09:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.struhal.com\/?p=3566"},"modified":"2019-01-08T18:50:58","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T17:50:58","slug":"j-s-bach-fuge-in-e-flat-major-wtc-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.struhal.com\/de\/2019\/01\/08\/j-s-bach-fuge-in-e-flat-major-wtc-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Alla breve&#8220; in J S Bach&#8217;s Fugue in E flat Major WTC II&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While studying different Urtext editions, &nbsp;Henle Urtext and B\u00e4renreiter Urtext, of the above mentioned Fugue, I found out that Henle prints &#8222;<a class=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Datei:Allabreve.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/95\/Allabreve.png\" alt=\"Allabreve.png\" width=\"10\" height=\"18\" data-file-width=\"26\" data-file-height=\"46\"><\/a>&#8220; while B\u00e4renreiter prints &#8222;c&#8220; for this Fugue.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out there are different autographs (handwritten copies of &#8222;Bach&#8217;s original working manuscript of for the newly compiled collection the WTC II&#8220; that has been lost), that serve as source for those Urtext editions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the one of Johann Sebastian Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena (from 1739\/40), today at the British Library&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/manuscripts\/Viewer.aspx?ref=add_ms_35021_f005r\">Bach&#8217;s autograph in London<\/a><\/li>\n<li>B\u00e4renreiter\/Bach-Archiv Leipzig, for this specific aspect regarding this Fugue, refers to the autograph by Johann Christoph Altnickol (Bach&#8217;s student and later son in law, copied after Bach&#8217;s original in 1744), today at Berliner Staatsbibliothek&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bach-digital.de\/rsc\/viewer\/BachDigitalSource_derivate_00074280\/00000036.jpg\">Bach&#8217;s Autograph in Berlin<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bach-digital.de\/receive\/BachDigitalSource_source_00001380\">complete copy by Altnickol of Bach&#8217;s compilation, at Berliner Staatsbibliothek<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you start digging into it a little the tradition of the WTC II in detail seems very fascinating&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If you follow the links above those autographs are beautiful to look at and read!<\/p>\n<p>I am grateful to the Bach-Archiv Leipzig for replying to questions of this kind immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Quote: B\u00e4renreiter, The Well-Tempered Clavier II, Preface, Alfred D\u00fcrr\/transl J.
